Being a good driver means staying aware of your surroundings. Inclement weather requires even more vigilance. One danger to watch out for when it's raining is hydroplaning, which is when your vehicle slides and your tires leave the road's surface. They actually glide on a film of water on top of the road, making steering and braking a challenge.

You can avoid hydroplaning by making sure your tires are properly inflated and that they have good tread. Drive below the speed limit when it's raining so that you'll have better control of your vehicle.

Don't use cruise control on wet roads. Also, be sure to avoid braking too hard. Hold the steering wheel steady and turn the wheel gently when necessary. If you're able, drive in the tracks left by the car ahead of you. Don't drive through pooled water or puddles. Try to avoid outer lanes where most puddling occurs.
