In addition to its warning system, which usually includes visual and auditory alerts, radar sensors and cameras are also vital to the operation of a blind-spot monitor. While mounted to the vehicle's rear, these components detect any adjacent lanes' traffic that you may not be able to see with only your side-view and rear-view mirrors.
MINI of Charleston recommends that locals still remain cautious, though, because there are things that can go wrong with a blind-spot monitor. For example, if mud or snow covers the rear sensor or camera, the blind-spot monitor will have no way to spot commuters in adjacent lanes.
