Our team at MINI of Charleston wants to help you be informed on the different features and systems in your vehicle. When it comes to maintaining your vehicle, understanding the parts is just part of the process. The alternator in your vehicle helps to power your different electrical systems and also recharges your battery. Without the alternator, your battery would quickly get drained.

Over time, the alternator can wear out and need replacing. One of the common ways of knowing that your alternator has gone bad is the warning light on your instrument panel. It will usually appear as a battery icon or say GEN or ALT on the panel. Sometimes it can also just be a bad battery that needs replacing. You can do a simple test by jump starting the battery. If the alternator isn't working, the car will quickly die since the battery isn't being charged.
